What is the Blair Chiropractic Technique?

The Blair Chiropractic Technique is an exclusive chiropractic technique which focuses on vertebral subluxations of the upper cervical spine, Atlas (C 1) and Axis (C 2). The concept of exclusively focusing on Atlas and Axis was originally derived from scientific research of Dr. Barlett J. Palmer. Dr. Palmer was the major driving force within the chiropractic profession in the areas of philosophy, science, and research, where eventually developed and refined his classical Palmer H.I.O. Specific technique of exclusively adjusting the upper cervical area of the human spine.

Dr. William G. Blair was a 1949 graduate of the Palmer School of Chiropractic and was trained in the Palmer H.I.O. Specific technique. By 1951 he began research various misalignment models, eventually creating a new method of cervical x-rays in order facilitate the analysis of the upper cervical spine. Dr. Blair's spinographic research and clinical procedures were propounded on his empirical observations that clinically significant asymmetry "malformation" of bilateral structures usually employed in cervical spinographic analysis is the rule rather than the exception. The simplifying assumption underlying Dr. Blair's system is that, regardless of asymmetry, the opposing surfaces of a joint develop in such a way that their margins are identical in conformation. Therefore, properly-imaged and properly aligned articulations will demonstrate exact juxtaposition of adjacent articular surfaces at their osseous margins, while misaligned articulations will demonstrate certain observable and classifiable disappositions at their osseous margins. If a vertebrae misaligns, and in the absence of fracture, that misalignment must take place at the articulations. The articulation is therefore the most anatomically accurate place to assess the alignment of the vertebra.

This new method eventually became known as the "Blair Chiropractic Technique", which made it possible to tailor the chiropractic adjustment precisely to the shape and orientation of the articulation being adjusted, as it presented in each case. The presence of cervical nerve interference is established by observation of both persistent differential paraspinal thermographic pattern and functional leg length deficiency. The misalignment component of the subluxation is demonstrated radiographically by means of specially developed spinographic views which are customized to each patient's anatomy. Both the upper cervical x-ray analysis and the delivery of the adjustment itself could therefore be "customized" to accommodate each individual patient's anatomical situation.

The primary method of chiropractic care given at Gil Chiropractic is the Blair Chiropractic Technique. Dr. Kazuo E. Gil is a licensed as a Doctor of Chiropractic in the states of California and Hawaii, with post graduate training in upper cervical chiropractic. Dr. Gil specializes in the Blair Chiropractic Technique, in addition to holding field certification with the Wm. G. Blair Chiropractic Society.

Unfortunately, very few chiropractors have adequate training in any form of upper cervical chiropractic and even fewer who have a satisfactory level of proficiency in the Blair Chiropractic Technique.
